Skin Health in North Georgia

Apr 17, 2024

North Georgia is rich in scenic cities and towns, boasting a wide array of natural beauty including mountains, lakes, waterfalls, gorges, farmland and much more!

The city of Milton is proud of its rural equestrian heritage and is abound with parks, preservations, and hiking trails. Milton, along with numerous other North Georgia cities, has experienced tremendous population growth due to its tranquility and high quality of life. Many of those residing in the area are outdoor enthusiasts, susceptible to accumulating a greater degree of UV exposure putting them at risk for skin cancer development, various skin conditions, and premature aging.

In fact, according to the CDC, the rate of new melanoma diagnosis is higher in Georgia than the national average. Thus, it is important to be aware and practice safe sun habits as unprotected exposure to UV radiation is the most preventable risk factor for the development of skin cancer.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to safely enjoy all Georgia has to offer:

  • Use sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 or higher and reapply at least every two hours
  • Wear sun protective clothing such as UV clothing, long sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats
  • Seek shade especially during the hours of 10 am - 4 pm and pay attention to the UV index
  • Do not let yourself get a sunburn
  • Avoid sun tanning and tanning beds
